Nauryz is a major holiday in Kazakhstan.  It is celebrated for several days, beginning March 21, the spring equinox.  The city is decorated with large plastic tulips and artificial trees adorned with spring blossoms.  Real flowers and blossoming trees will appear much later in the spring.

On the Saturday, we visited a town square to observe festivities.  In addition to the wrestling, there were games of tug of war and arm wrestling.  The yurts and citizens in native dress are always interesting, and there were music and dance performances.

Plenty of people bought food to enjoy at these outdoor tables.  Although the pastries we bought were good, it was hard to enjoy a picnic at 18 degrees with a brisk wind.  I understand that many families celebrate the holiday by feasting in their homes.
