Horsemeat in a can. This seems to be a popular item here.
The pillows on our bed needed to be replaced. We decided to do our shopping at the Metro store, having heard that it was something like a Costco or Super Target, Kazakh style. It is about 15 kilometers south of us, so we walked over to Saryarka St. to flag down a gypsy cab. The trip there was uneventful, and we were able to find plump pillows and a good kitchen broom, plus a few groceries. We were hoping to find some of the American foods we have been lacking. We had one success in the food department: PEANUT BUTTER! After checking out, we walked out to the parking lot hoping for a taxi or gypsy cab. No taxi, no cab. By the way, it was -25 degrees F this morning. We boarded a city bus just pulling up, rode until it stopped nearer the city, then transferred to a bus we recognized as one that has a stop near our apartment. I asked Burke what he would have thought a year ago if someone had told him that in 2014 he would be riding a bus in Kazakhstan with bed pillows, a kitchen broom and groceries. It was our comic relief for the day. The trip home was nearly an hour and a half, but now we have pillows and peanut butter.
Great story! I'm impressed that you were able to find the right buses; I'm pretty sure they don't put English subtitles on buses in Astana. And congrats on the peanut butter.
