Travel to Astana

December 23, 2013

I experienced my first moment of panic at the airport in Novosibirsk on Monday.  We were checking our bags and getting our boarding passes to travel to Astana when we were informed that we needed cash to pay for our extra bags.  We had plenty of tenges which is Kazakh currency but not enough rubles, the currency required since we were still in Russia.  I volunteered to go to the ATM since Burke will still waiting for his boarding pass.  All of the signage and instructions were in Russian of course.  I was able to insert my debit card and enter the pin.  All the choices for transactions came up in Russian.  I had no idea what to do.  My card was in the machine and I was very afraid to make a choice at random.  I asked people around me if anyone spoke English.  Blank stares.  When I looked at the screen again I realized that the windows with choices had small pictures.  I touched the one that looked like cash.  Success!

I noticed this sign while we were waiting for our flight.  It says "American Bar & Grill" in English at the bottom .  Would have been nice at the ATM machine.

  1. Scary! I'm glad you had a happy ending. I like stories that finish with a handful of money.
